A three-year-old girl was sexually assaulted and killed by a rape defendant who was out on bail in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, police said Thursday. Adesh Patil, 34, abducted the girl from her home when she was sleeping with her parents in the village of Vadgaon in Pentehsil in the early hours of Wednesday, a police officer said.

The victim’s family belongs to a tribal community. Patil took the girl to an isolated location behind a school in the area where he allegedly raped and killed her.

The boy was found by his grandmother. They took her to a government hospital where she was pronounced dead, the police officer said. Patil had been seen wandering the area around the same time, so police suspected him of being involved in the heinous crime.

He has several cases filed against him and obtained bail in a rape case just 10 days ago, the official said. The police formed a special team to locate him. He was arrested Wednesday night and a court sent him into police custody until Thursday, Jan. 8, the official said.

A case has been filed against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) and the Recognized Castes and Tribes (Atrocity Prevention) Act. Locals staged a protest in Pen over the incident and called for a closure on Thursday.

Maharashtra Minister Aditi Tatkare, a Raigad District MLA, took to Twitter to ask the state’s Interior Minister Anil Deshmukh to ensure that the accused receives the strictest punishment after a speedy trial. He also demanded compensation for the victim’s family.
