Within the assembly, O Rajagopal defended some parts of the agricultural laws, but later said that he supports the assembly’s resolution.
In an unusual political situation emerging from Kerala, the only member of the BJP Legislative Assembly backed the resolution passed in the assembly on Thursday seeking the withdrawal of the three controversial agricultural laws. When the resolution was brought up for discussion, BJP MLA O Rajagopal de Nemom defended certain aspects of the farm laws, however, they did not call for split votes while the resolution was being voted on. But while addressing the press after the session, he expressed his support for the resolution.
While speaking at a press conference after the special assembly session, O Rajagopal said that he abstained from voting in favor of the resolution, but made it clear that he was in favor of it. He added that he only had objections against certain words of the resolution. Rajagopal is the most important BJP leader in the state with whom the saffron party opened its account at the Nemom constituency assembly in Thiruvananthapuram.
The session of the Special Assembly that was held on Thursday morning and approved a resolution that seeks the withdrawal of the agricultural laws.
Within the assembly, O Rajagopai said: “The agricultural laws aim to protect farmers and allow them to sell their products anywhere in the country without the intervention of intermediaries.”
However, in the press meeting after the end of the session, Rajagopal said: “I accept the consensus of the assembly, isn’t that what being democratic is all about? I have disagreements with some parts of the resolution, which I have pointed out in the assembly. But I support the final conclusion. It’s not fair for me to oppose the state’s position just because I’m a BJP person, ”he said.
When asked if he agreed with the resolution that sought to repeal the farm laws, his answer was ‘absolutely’.
“There will be no problem airing my opinion,” was his response when asked if there would be a controversy over a high-level BJP MLA supporting the withdrawal of the law. He also added that the reason he did not vote for the resolution is because he did not want it to be construed as going against the party.
