Nepalese Unity Elusive, Chinese Delegation May Return Empty-handed

NEW DELHI: A Chinese delegation to Nepal, led by the Chinese Communist Partythe foreign affairs committee, may be forced to return to Beijing without the party unity they had tried to achieve between Prime Minister KP Sharma Olithe faction and the rival Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda to camp.

The four-member Chinese delegation met with the former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba (Nepalese Congress) on Tuesday and invited him to the CCP’s centennial celebration in 2021. They had also met Baburam Bhattarai, also a former prime minister, before. Political observers in Kathmandu described both meetings as if they were meant to show that the Chinese were not interested only in the PNC.

The delegation is exploring whether it would be possible to rework an old formula: give Oli one year as PM and another year for Prachanda. Although Oli apparently agreed to consider it, the formula has been rejected by Prachanda, sources said, on the grounds that Oli had refused to give up power after the 2.5-year mark, as had apparently been decided before previous elections. The conditions that Prachanda put on the delegation were that the Chamber should be reconstituted and that Oli should resign. This was not acceptable to Oli.
