How to electronically verify your income tax return

Filing income tax returns can be a complicated and tedious process, but it is something that everyone who makes money has to do. There are three steps involved in the process. First, the taxpayer must enter details of income and tax obligations on the ITR form. Second, they must electronically verify the tax return. Only after the above two have been done, the tax return is processed by the Income Tax authority, which is the third and final step.

Electronic verification of the income statement is a mandatory step that can be done in several ways. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to do it.

In addition to physical verification of ITR, electronic verification can be performed in four other ways:

1. Use of Net Banking

2. Using the bank account number

3. Use of Demat account number

4. Using Aadhaar OTP

Steps for electronic verification of ITR:

Step 1: Visit the IT Department e-filing portal at incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in

Step 2: Click the Electronic Verification Return link available under Quick Links

Step 3: Enter your PAN, year of evaluation and acknowledgment number that you would have received at the time of the ITR submission

You can log in to the ITR portal using PAN and password to find the recognition number by clicking on the link “View returns / forms”

Step 4: Find the uploaded ITR form entry and click the e-Verify link next to it

Step 5: Four options will appear on the screen to generate the electronic verification code (EVC)
