West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said Tuesday that those who do not respect Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore claim to have built the “Sonar Bangla”.
Conspiracies are brewing to destroy the culture of Bengal. Stop this policy of violence and divisive politics, ”CM Banerjee said while addressing a political rally in Bolpur in Birbhum district.
“Those who do not respect Mahatma Gandhi and other icons of the country are talking about building ‘Sonar Bangla’ (Golden Bengal). Rabindranath Tagore already created ‘Sonar Bangla’ several decades ago, all we have to do is protect the site from the BJP communal attack, “he said.
The Chief Minister also accused the BJP of defaming the assets of Visva Bharati University (VBU), in a reference to the letter sent by the university team to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen for allegedly illegally occupying the land that belongs to him. “I don’t like it when I see dirty politics in Visva-Bharati. That narrow and obnoxious policy has been imported all over Bengal. Attempts are being made to cultivate the politics of hatred in the name of Hinduism. “
“Vice Chancellor Visva-Bharati is a BJP man; he is pursuing communal politics, smearing the heritage of the varsity team, ”he said.
Visva-Bharati’s Deputy Foreign Minister Bidyut Chakrabarty recently provoked the ire of the Mamata government after he accused Sen of illegally occupying varsity lands. Sen has argued that the land is registered in the registries and is on a long-term lease.
The TMC supreme also accused the saffron party of “buying” TMC’s MLA ahead of next year’s state Assembly elections. “You cannot eliminate the rank and file by buying rotten MLAs with money. Do not try to drive a nail into the rock. The nail will break, ”he said.
TMC Senior Leader Suvendu Adhikari, along with five TMC MLAs and a party deputy, joined the BJP during the Union Interior Minister Amit Shah’s demonstration in Medinipur on December 19.
Describing Interior Minister Amit Shah’s recent visit to a folk singer’s residence here for lunch on December 20 as nothing less than “showing off,” Banerjee claimed that the food served to the BJP leader was they cooked in five-star hotels.
Reacting to Banerjee’s comments, BJP State Chairman Dilip Ghosh said the TMC Supreme is suspicious of the rise of the saffron party in Bengal.
“What makes you think that only the TMC has the right to speak about Rabindranath Tagore? The TMC government has failed miserably on all fronts in the last ten years, and now it is trying to brand us as outsiders.
“The days of TMC dispensing are numbered in Bengal and I think she has intuited it. The TMC is suspicious of the rise of the BJP in Bengal, ”he said.
On Monday, Banerjee had accused the BJP of attacking educators and of “trying to bankrupt universities and educational institutions.” She had Sen defended who has been accused of illegally occupying land belonging to the VBU.
