THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Arya Rajendran, a 21-year-old math undergraduate student, was sworn in as mayor of Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation Monday. She is currently the youngest mayor in the position of a municipal corporation in the country.
UDF and BJP had presented candidates for the mayoral election. Arya won by 54 votes while BJP candidate Simi Jyothish got 35 votes. UDF candidate Mary Pushpam got 9 votes. One vote was invalid and a councilwoman was absent from the session because she was in quarantine.
Arya’s parents, Rajendran and Sreelatha, both longtime party activists, stood proudly near the podium watching their youngest daughter swear in as mayor of the city corporation. Thiruvananthapuram is the largest municipal corporation among six corporations in Kerala. Thiruvananthapuram has a total of 100 rooms.
Former mayors VK Prasanth, K Sreekumar, K Chandrika, C Jayan Babu, V Sivankutty were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
