The mother of Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman, Kareema Begum, died in Chennai on Monday, sources close to the family said, the PTI news agency reported. The music teacher, on Monday afternoon, shared a photo of his mother on his Twitter profile without a caption. In reaction to his tweet, his friends from the film and music industry offered their condolences to the singer. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami and DMK President MK Stalin also paid tribute to Kareema Begum on Twitter. Director Mohan Raja, producer Dr. Dhananjayan, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, music composers Shreya Ghoshal, Thaman, singer Harshdeep Kaur, and many others expressed their regret on social media.

“Our condolences sir. May your soul rest in peace,” Mohan Raja tweeted.

Shreya Ghoshal wrote: “Deeply saddened by this news, Mr. Rahman. She was one of the kindest and most loving people I have ever met. Praying for your departed soul.”
