Telangana isolates 18 UK returnees who tested positive for coronavirus


Those who have come to Telangana from the UK after December 9 have been advised to call 040-24651119 for the government to arrange a COVID-19 test.

Eighteen people who returned from the UK to Telangana have tested positive for the coronavirus so far, health officials said Saturday. Samples from infected people have been sent to the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) to sequence the genome and find out if they are infected by the new strain of the virus found in the UK. Of the 18 positive patients, four are from Hyderabad, six from the Medchal Malkajgiri district, two from the Jagtial district, and one from the Mancherial, Nalgonda, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Siddipet and Warangal Urban districts.

The director of the Department of Public Health, Dr. G Srinivas Rao, said that those who were found infected were kept in special wards in different hospitals. According to officials, 1,200 people have traveled to Telangana from the UK since December 9. Of these, 926 were identified and tested for COVID-19.

A total of 92 returnees came from other states. After landing in Hyderabad, they departed for their respective states. The Telangana Health Department informed interested states. Health authorities also tracked 76 contacts of those who tested positive. They have been quarantined and their health is under close observation.

Meanwhile, authorities in neighboring Andhra Pradesh have so far identified 1,214 people who returned to the state from the UK, and have tracked 1,158 people, while efforts are underway to track down the remaining 56. In total, 1,101 people who returned from the UK were transferred to quarantine centers with six testing positive for AP. The samples from positive cases have now been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune.
