Sourav Ganguly meets West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar at the Raj Bhavan

Calcutta:

Sourav Ganguly met with West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar for nearly two hours at the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata today, sparking speculation as to whether he was going to be presented as the BJP’s trump card against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. of the Trinamool Congress.

“This was just a courtesy call,” Sourav Ganguly said after exiting the talks. “Don’t speculate. The governor hasn’t seen Eden Gardens yet,” Ganguly said.

“The governor said he has been in Bengal since July last year. He said he wanted to visit Eden Gardens and meet me. I told him that was not possible today because there was some cricket practice. I decided to come meet him and invite him to Eden Gardens next week, “Ganguly told reporters outside Raj Bhavan.

Dhankar tweeted photos of himself with Ganguly. “I had an interaction with ‘Dada’ @ SGanguly99 President @BCCI in Raj Bhawan today at 4.30pm on various topics. I accepted his offer to visit Eden Gardens, the oldest cricket ground in the country established in 1864,” the governor tweeted .

Sunday’s rally at Raj Bhavan has triggered political temperatures in Bengal. On his last visit to the state on December 19-20, Interior Minister Amit Shah had said that Bengal’s next chief minister would be a “bhoomiputra” (son of the earth), but did not elaborate.

But speculation about BJP’s attempt to lure Ganguly is not new. The same had happened in January 2015 when Harsh Goenka, president of RPG Enterprises, tweeted: “Saurav Ganguly will join the BJP. Big blow for the match in West Bengal. #Dada vs Didi.”

Ganguly had declined to comment at the time and the BJP had also deleted the tweet.

Mr. Ganguly said categorically today that his meeting with the governor was mere courtesy and that there was no room for speculation.
