Phagwara:

On Friday, activists from the Bharti Kisan (Doaba) Union gave gherao to local BJP leaders who had gathered at a hotel in Punjab’s Phagwara to celebrate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, forcing them to leave by the back door under police protection.

The protesters claimed that the hotel was owned by a BJP activist who also ran a company that supplied feed for cattle and chickens. They said they will boycott the company’s products.

Led by Union Vice President Kirpal Singh Mussapur, several activists held a protest outside the hotel and gheraoed the BJP leaders and workers who had managed to enter before the farmers began their demonstration.

The protesters also did not allow several BJP activists, including Bharati Sharma, district chairman of the BJP’s Mahila wing, to enter the hotel, police said.

Those who had entered had to sneak one by one through the back door of the hotel under police protection, police said.

Among them were BJP bloc and district presidents Rakesh Duggal and Paramjit Singh Pamma Chachoki, and former mayor Arun Khosla.
