Arya Rajendran, 21, could be the new mayor of Thiruvananthapuram

Arya is a member of the state committee of the Student Federation of India (SFI), the student organization of the CPI (M).

Arya Rajendran, 21, who represents the Mudavanmukal neighborhood in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, may become the new mayor of Kerala’s capital. The CPI (M) district committee met on Friday after the party’s victory in the recent civic body elections and recommended Arya’s name as the next mayor. The state committee is expected to make an official announcement soon and if they accept the district committee’s recommendation, then Arya may be the youngest person in India to be appointed to the position.

Arya is currently the state president of Balasangam, a children’s organization affiliated with the CPI (M). He is also a member of the state committee of the Student Federation of India (SFI), the student organization of CPI (M). Arya is currently pursuing her BSC at All Saints College in the city.

During the local body’s survey campaign in Kerala, Arya had told TNM: “Coming from a children’s organization, I would focus on improving the lower primary school in the neighborhood.”

Two female candidates, OG Oleena and S Pushpalatha, were previously projected as mayoral candidates in recently concluded local agency polls. However, while Oleena was defeated in the Kunnkuzhi room, Pushpalath was defeated in the Nedungad room.

The Left Democratic Front led by the CPI (M) had emerged victorious in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for the second time in a row. The front won 51 of the 100 theaters, increasing the number of seats it gained from 43 in 2015 to 51 in 2020. The results were announced on December 16.

Arya will be appointed to the position of mayor according to the reservation rules. In Kerala, fifty percent of the seats are reserved for women in local bodies and according to the rules, women run civic bodies alternately. In 2015, VK Prasanth of the CPI (M) was elected mayor. Prasanth resigned when he was elected as the MLA of the Vattiyoorkkav constituency in the by-Assembly elections held in October 2019, which is when K Sreekumar replaced Prasanth as mayor. Therefore, according to the rules, this time, Arya will replace Sreekumar as mayor.
