New Delhi: BCCI’s general body approved the 10-team Indian Premier League (IPL) from the 2022 edition on Thursday at its 89th Annual General Meeting in Ahmedabad.
The inclusion of two new teams could not be done in time for IPL 14 considering that there is little time for bids to be submitted for new teams.
“The 14th IPL will be held in April 2021 and the executives will discuss the teams. BCCI is doing an exemplary job for cricket,” said Amin Pathan, vice president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association.
BCCI decided to back ICC’s bid for the inclusion of cricket in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics after some clarification from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a source told PTI.
Additionally, it was decided that all first-class players, both male and female, will receive adequate compensation for the shortened national season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
BCCI plans to launch the national season, after several months of delay, in January with the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 championship.
In other decisions, the veteran leader of Congress, Rajiv Shukla, was officially appointed Vice Chairman of the Board in place of his protégé Mahim Verma of Uttarakhand.
It also emerged that the general body decided in favor of Sourav Ganguly continuing as director on the ICC Board.
Secretary Jay Shah will be the alternate director and representative of India at the meetings of the Chief Executive Committee of the world body.
It has emerged that most stakeholders feel that having an IPL of nine or 10 teams in 2021 will be a hasty decision, as new franchises will have very little time to build a competitive team, PTI reported Monday.
“There are many modalities that need to be discussed and most stakeholders feel that with the IPL taking place in April, there is very little time for a mega auction and to have a uniform retention policy, acceptable to all existing franchises. , “a senior BCCI official told PTI under conditions of anonymity.
“You have to invite bids and have a bidding process ready. In the event that two teams win bids at the end of January or early February, it is necessary to give them time for the auction, which can then only take place in March. That leaves to a new team with very little time to plan, “he added.
An IPL of 10 teams means 94 games and a window of almost two and a half months, which can ruin the international schedule.
In addition, the availability of the best foreign players must be guaranteed for the entire duration of the IPL and the transmission money must also be renegotiated per year, which is for 60 matches.
