New Delhi:
Rahul Gandhi, in a strong attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government over farmers’ protests, said today that “there is no democracy” in India and that those who rose up against the prime minister were labeled as terrorists, “even if it was (RSS head) Mohan Bhagwat. “
“Prime Minister Modi is making money for crony capitalists. Whoever tries to oppose him will be called a terrorist, be it farmers, workers and even Mohan Bhagwat,” said the congressional leader, referring to Rashtriya chief Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), BJP’s ideological mentor.
“There is no democracy in India. If some of you think there is, then it is in your imagination.”
Rahul Gandhi spoke after leading a congressional worker delegation to President Ram Nath Kovind to seek his intervention to end the mass protests near Delhi over the farm laws. Congress has also demanded a joint session of parliament to discuss the laws.
The congressional march led by Rahul Gandhi to the Rashtrapati Bhawan presidential palace was stopped by the police and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other party leaders were stopped and driven in buses.
Gandhi, speaking after his meeting with the president, said the laws would take away the livelihoods of millions of farmers and were designed to favor “four or five entrepreneurs” who were crony capitalists.
“What the youth and all the people of this country must know is that the PM is an incompetent man, who knows nothing. He is an incompetent man who only listens to crony capitalists. He does what they tell him,” he said.
Thousands of farmers have been protesting since late November on the roads near Delhi against the laws, which the center says are important for reforms in the agricultural sector. Farmers fear that the laws will deprive them of guaranteed minimum incomes and leave them exposed to exploitation by big business.
“Farmers and workers are uniting now. But as always, the moment someone speaks out against the government of the day, they are branded as anti-national and terrorists. This is unfortunate, but that is what is happening today. The voices of the people are being stifled, ”said the congressional leader.
