NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, the government called Rahul Gandhi’s tweet about the cancellation of the India-Russia summit “false and misleading”, explaining that the scheduled meeting between the two nations was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Earlier today, the congressional leader blamed a news report claiming that the recent cancellation of the annual India-Russia summit, the first in two decades, was due to Moscow’s unrest with Quad, a group from the United States, Japan, Australia and India to counter Chinese influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
The foreign affairs ministry said the scheduled summit was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“This was a mutually agreed decision between the two governments. Any accusation to the contrary is false and misleading. Spreading false stories in important relationships is particularly irresponsible,” said the Foreign Ministry spokesman.
Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi, in a tweet had said: “Russia is a very important friend of India. Damaging our traditional relations is shortsighted and dangerous for our future.
Shortly after the statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Russian ambassador to India agreed with the Indian government.
“In contact with India to work on new dates for the Annual India-Russia Summit, postponed for epidemiological reasons. We are confident that it will take place in the near future, while Russian-Indian relations will continue to develop,” “The Russian ambassador to India was quoted by the ANI news agency.
