With regular pattern virat Kohli Returning home for the birth of her first child, Rahane will lead India in the remaining three rounds of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Ishant, who missed the Australian tour due to a lateral strain injury, said Rahane has the ability to play the leadership role very well.
“He is very calm and confident and I must say that he is the captain of a bowler,” Ishant told ‘ESPNcricinfo’.
“Whenever we played together and Virat hadn’t been on the field, I would ask myself ‘What kind of field do you want? When do you want to bowl? Do you want to keep bowling?’ ‘
“He’s the captain of a bowler. He’s not someone who says’ do this or that … He’s very clear about what he wants from his team.”
Rahane has led India to victory both times he had captained the team in Kohli’s absence against Australia and Afghanistan.
“You can see what kind of person he is in his captaincy. He’s very calm and collected. I can’t say he doesn’t have a sense of humor. He’s joking with us,” Ishant said.
“Jinx (Rahane) transmits calm energy in a pressure situation. There will be no tension, he would communicate very well with the bowlers.”
Speaking of Kohli, the 32-year-old pacemaker said: “If there’s a growing association and it’s a flat phase where the fielders are just making their moves, a player’s energy level can change the scene,” he said.
“The kind of energy Virat brings … not everyone can match that.”
The second test is scheduled for Saturday followed by games in Sydney and Brisbane.
