US President-elect Joe Biden on Monday appointed American Indian Bharat Ramamurti as deputy director of the National Economic Council, which is the White House’s advisory agency to the president on national and global economic policy-making.
Joelle Gamble, who is on the Biden-Harris transition national economic policy team, and David Kamin, a law professor at New York University School of Law, are the other two members of the Economic Council.
“The appointees today have broad views on how to build a stronger and more inclusive middle class. With their solid experience and qualifications, they will provide the necessary voices to guide my administration in overcoming our nation’s unprecedented economic challenges, ”Biden said during the announcement.
Currently the managing director of the corporate energy program at the Roosevelt Institute, Ramamurti served as Senator Elizabeth Warren’s economic advisor for seven years, including her 2020 presidential campaign.
He was appointed to a congressional committee that oversees the implementation of the Coronavirus Relief, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES), the more than $ 2 trillion stimulus package in April.
Hailing from Tamil Nadu, Ramamurti and his two brothers are also Harvard alumni, according to Harvard Magazine. His father, Ravi Ramamurti, also did his doctorate at Harvard.
On his selection to the Economic Council, Ramamurti tweeted, “I am honored to join the Biden-Harris Administration as Deputy Director of the National Economic Council. We have a lot to do to overcome this crisis and create a stronger and fairer economy, and I am excited to be working alongside this great team. “
Beginning with the historic election of Kamala Harris, the first black, Native American woman to be elected vice president of the United States, Biden has included several Americans of Indian descent on his team.
He appointed American Indian Vedant Patel as deputy press secretary two days ago.
