Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina was among a number of celebrities arrested for violating COVID-19 regulations in Mumbai on Monday. Raina, famous singer Guru Randhawa and Sussane Khan were booked after a raid took place at a nightclub near Mumbai airport.
Raina, Randhawa and others were later released on bail. Mumbai police arrested a total of 34 people, including club staff, for failing to follow COVID standards set by the state government. Raina’s team has released a statement confirming that the former cricketer was in town for a shoot and was not aware of local schedules and protocols.
The statement further said that Raina regrets the unfortunate incident and agrees to follow the rules and regulations set by the governing bodies in the future as well.
“Suresh was in Mumbai for a session that lasted late into the night and was invited by a friend for a quick dinner before catching his flight back to Delhi. I was not aware of local schedules and protocols. Once pointed out, he immediately complied with the procedures established by the authorities and regrets the unfortunate and unintentional incident, “Raina’s team said in a statement.
“He always maintains the rules and laws established by the governing bodies with the utmost respect and will continue to do so in the future as well,” they added.
The arrests took place at the Dragonfly club after police learned that the club was open beyond the allotted time and did not follow strict COVID-19 guidelines imposed by the government. Maharashtra is one of the states hardest hit by COVID-19 and has seen thousands of new cases of the contagious infection on a daily basis.
The Maharashtra government has also imposed restrictions on public outings and celebrations before Christmas and New Years to curb the spread of the virus.
