When the Maharashtra government declared a night curfew in municipal corporate areas on Monday, Mumbai civic administration took steps to enforce restrictions and arrange to quarantine air passengers arriving from Britain, where a new variant of COVID-19 is spreading rapidly.

The state government has declared a nightly curfew in municipal corporate areas (cities) from December 22 to January 5 as a precautionary measure amid growing concerns about the spread of the new variant of the coronavirus in Britain.

According to the state government directive, a curfew will be applied between 11 pm and 6 am in the financial capital until January 5, said Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner IS Chahal.

Chahal said essential services such as the supply of vegetables and milk will not be affected during the night curfew, but more than five people cannot gather in one place during the seven-hour period.

According to state government estimates, around 1,000 passengers are expected to arrive at the city’s airport on five flights from the UK until midnight on Dec. 22, he said.

Chahal said all of them will be mandatorily kept in institutional quarantine facilities for seven days, even if they don’t have any symptoms of COVID-19.

Passengers showing symptoms similar to COVID-19 will be admitted to the Seven Hills Hospital run by BMC in suburban Marol, he said.

“No flight will land from the UK after 2:30 am tomorrow. Passengers who have boarded flights will be placed in institutional quarantine. Asymptomatic people will be quarantined in hotels, while symptomatic passengers will be admitted to the Hospital. GT, “said Chahal.

Passengers from Pune, Nagpur and other parts of the state who come on these flights will not be able to return home and will have to remain in institutional quarantine even if they do not show any symptoms of COVID-19.
