TUTICORIN: Justice (retired) Aruna Jagadeesan Commission investigating police shootings at anti-Sterlite protesters in Tuticorin in May 2018 that claimed 14 lives has summoned the actor Rajinikanth appear before him on January 19, during its twenty-fourth session.
Rajinikanth has been asked to appear before the commission at the Tuticorin camp office at 10 am on January 19.
The reason for the actor’s subpoena is his comment after visiting the riot-ravaged city on May 30, 2018, that the “intrusion of anti-social elements” was the reason the mob turned violent and forced the police to open fire. Rajinikanth said he knew who was behind it and would reveal it in the right place.
A source from the commission told TOI that at least four people, including Naam Tamilar Katchi’s leader, Seeman, and relatives of the victims, had demanded that the commission ask him about his comment on the intrusion of antisocial elements. the citation shipped at 11.30am on Monday.
Rajinikanth was previously asked to appear before the commission on February 25. Citing inconvenience to the public due to his visit and prior commitments, he requested exemption from appearing before the commission on February 25. His lawyer, Ilambarathi, appeared before the commission that day.
