Eighty-year-old Kanti Prasad and his wife Badami Devi today opened their new restaurant in New Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, the same town where until just over two months ago they sold dal, curries, parathas and rice for 30 rupees. 50 a plate.
After decades of barely making ends meet, the couple were suddenly pushed over the edge by the lockdown during which their business plummeted – their children, two sons and a daughter, have been no help. So much so that when food blogger Gaurav Vasan told them about his earnings one day in October, Prasad burst into tears and showed some 10 rupee notes as his day’s collection.
Vasan’s video soon began to spread on social media, particularly on Instagram and Twitter. It moved so many people that the next morning, the Malviya Nagar kiosk was being thronged by residents of Delhi.
Today, all that social media support seemed to have turned into something concrete when Mr. Prasad and Ms. Devi started their new company.
“We are very happy, God has blessed us. I want to thank people for their help. I ask you to visit my restaurant. Here we will serve Indian and Chinese cuisine,” said Prasad, ANI elder.
