Ashoknagar:
West Bengal found a place on India’s oil map when Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday dedicated an oil and gas production field in the North 24 Parganas district to the nation.
He said that production from the oil reserve here, about 47 km from Calcutta, started with the extracted oil that was sent to the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) Haldia refinery.
“With the start of production from the Ashoknagar oil and gas reserve, West Bengal finds a place on the oil map,” he said after inaugurating the project.
The first proven oil and gas reserve in the state was discovered in 2018.
The Ashoknagar field, which lies under the Mahanadi-Bengal-Andaman (MBA) basin, has been shown to be commercially viable, he said.
The PSU’s main ONGC had spent Rs 3,381 million for the discovery of the Ashoknagar oil field, he said, adding that the company will explore two more wells under the Acreage Open Licensing Policy (OLAP).
The minister said that the crude oil discovered in the Ashoknagar reserve is of high quality.
He said commercial production from the oil field will increase West Bengal’s income and create job opportunities in the state.
