Guwahati:

The ruling BJP recorded a landslide victory in the Tiwa Autonomous Council by winning 33 out of 36 seats, the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) said on Saturday.

BJP ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won two seats, while the opposition Congress was decimated with just one seat in its kit, ASEC said in its results update.

The ruling party defeated Congress in most of the seats it won and humiliated some independent contestants in some places, according to tally updates.

Moniram Patar of BJP from Gobha constituency won unopposed, he said.

A total of 124 candidates were in the fray and more than 71 percent of the 3.08,409 voters exercised their right to vote on December 17 in 36 electoral districts spread over the metropolitan districts of Nagaon, Morigaon, Hojai and Kamrup.

The saffron party has had an impressive performance in back-to-back elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council and the Tiwa Autonomous Council, just a few months before the state elections scheduled for early next year.

In the recently concluded elections of the 40-member Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), the BJP formed the board in alliance with two other local parties.

The current Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) became the largest party with 17 seats.

The United People’s Liberal Party won 12 and the BJP nine, while the Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) and Congress each won one seat.

After the results were declared, a BPF and the sole member of Congress switched to the BJP, bringing the saffron party count to 11.

The BJP abandoned its state ally BPF and partnered with UPPL and GSP to jointly form the government of BTC.
