UK congratulates India on election to UN Security Council, discusses multilateralism and fight against terrorism

New Delhi: India and the United Kingdom held bilateral consultations on United Nations Security Council (UNSC) issues on Friday through virtual conferences, with Britain congratulating India on its election to the UNSC.

Both sides discussed in detail a wide range of issues on the UN Security Council’s agenda. The Indian delegation briefed their UK counterparts on their priorities during their next UNSC mandate, including reformed multilateralism and the fight against terrorism, ”the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

The UK side also reported on its priorities during its upcoming Presidency of the United Nations Security Council, including climate and security and hunger and hunger in conflict situations, the MEA said.

“India and the UK held bilateral consultations on UNSC issues on December 18, 2020 through the VTC mode. The UK delegation was led by James Kariuki, Director of the Commonwealth Department for Multilateral Policy and the UK Foreign Office, and included other UK Foreign Office officials and representatives from their Missions in New York and New Delhi. The Indian side was led by Prakash Gupta, JS (UNP & Summits), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and included other officials from MEA, PMI New York and the Indian High Commission in London, ”the MEA said in an official statement.

Both sides discussed in detail a wide range of issues on the UN Security Council agenda. The Indian delegation briefed their UK counterparts on their priorities during their next UN Security Council term, including reformed multilateralism and the fight against terrorism.

They agreed to work closely and continue their participation on all issues under the UNSC agenda for the next two years, the MEA said.
