India recorded another 25,153 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours on Saturday, bringing the country’s total number of cases to more than 1 crore.
Among overall cases, the number of active Covid-19 cases stands at 3.08,751, while 95,50,712 have so far recovered from the infection since the first case was reported in Kerala on January 30.
Apart from new cases of Covid-19, the death toll in India rose to 1.45,136, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Meanwhile, a total of 16,00,90,514 samples were tested for coronavirus as of Dec. 18, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research. Of these, 11,71,868 samples were analyzed on Friday.
India became the second country after the United States to cross 1 crore of coronavirus cases.
Status of the Covid-19 vaccine in India
Currently, six vaccines against the new coronavirus are in clinical trials in the country and are in different stages of development.
These include Covaxin, developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with ICMR, the second is developed by Zydus Cadila, the third by Gennova, the Oxford vaccine, the trial of which is conducted by the Serum Institute of India in Pune, the Sputnik V vaccine, manufactured by Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Hyderabad, in collaboration with the Gamaleya National Center of Russia and the sixth manufactured by Biological E Ltd, Hyderabad, in collaboration with MIT.
Additionally, three Covid-19 vaccines have applied for emergency use authorization in India. Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine, which is used for mass vaccination in the US, UK, Canada and other nations, has applied for authorization in India. Bharat Biotech and SII have also searched USA for their respective vaccine candidates.
On Twitter Friday morning, the Union Health Ministry tweeted: “Central government calibrated strategies through a ‘Whole Government’ approach have clearly focused on a high RECOVERY rate and a low rate of sustained mortality (sic) “.
“This has resulted in a very high recovery rate of more than 95%, one of the highest globally. This is driven by 34 states and UT reporting a recovery rate of over 90%,” he said in another tweet. .
India has seen “a sharp increase” in Covid-19 recoveries, from 50,000 in May to more than 95 lakh in December, the Center said earlier today. “Recoveries are more than 30 times higher than active cases (currently only 3.14% of total cases),” he added.
