AUS vs IND: India posts lowest total in test cricket, sets Australia’s 90-run goal

India posted its lowest total in the cricket event when it only managed 36/9 in the second inning of the day-night event in Adelaide. Mohammed Shami retired for one run when India set Australia a 90-run goal to win the match. India’s previous lowest total in the longest format was 42, which they scored against England in 1974 at Lord’s. The visitors, who were in the lead on the stumps on Day 2, put on a terrible show with the bat to get the unjustified record. Resuming his innings on 9/1 of Day 3, night watchman Jasprit Bumrah was the first to leave after delivering a single return catch to Pat Cummins. While Bumrah’s window was not a cause for concern, what happened next would forever be etched in the minds of cricket fans around the world. The immaculate bowling of Australian fast bowlers, coupled with poor shot selection by Indian batsmen, reduced the visitors to 15/5 from 15/1.

After the Bumrah wicket, Cummins got rid of Cheteshwar Pujara for a duck with a delivery peach to give India a big hit. Mayank Agarwal, after struggling for his nine of 40 balls, also delivered a single catch behind Josh Hazlewood’s bowling stumps.

Rahane, who is set to lead India from the next game onwards, made a pass from Hazlewood to Tim Paine behind the stumps. He also went out for a duck after facing only four balls.

Indian captain Virat Kohli, playing his last innings of the calendar year, shot himself in the foot while playing away from his body and was caught in the slip cord by Cameroon Green, who completed the catch after a fumble.

This was the first year since 2008 when Kohli was unable to score a century in the calendar year, in all formats.

Wriddhiman Saha along with Hanuma Vihari showed some resistance and helped India avoid the lowest total in test cricket when they reached the 26-run mark.

Another bad shot resulted in Saha’s wicket as he delivered a single catch to Marnus Labuschagne in the short half wicket after scoring four runs.

Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s hero with the ball in the first innings, set off for a golden duck. He also managed an exterior delivery to the goalkeeper.

Hanuma Vihari cut a short delivery from Cummins behind the point as India avoided the lowest total in test cricket. Hazlewood sent him packing, however, completing his eighth five-wicket run in test cricket when he induced an outside lead that went straight to the goalie.

Shami was forced to leave the field after being hit by a short pitch, ending India’s dismal innings. Not a single Indian batsman could reach double digits, with starter Agarwal scoring the most with just nine runs.
