NEW DELHI: As the winter chill takes hold of the plains, the Indian Meteorological Department on Friday it said nighttime temperatures would remain below normal in North India over the next week and slight relief can be expected just a week later. In its forecast for December 17-24 and December 24-30, the IMD said that minimum temperatures would be below normal by 2 to 6 degrees Celsius in most of northwestern, central and eastern India.
Temperatures are likely to be close to normal or slightly higher than normal in the remaining parts of the country during the first week.
“Cold to severe wave cold wave conditions would occur in some pockets on Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh and north rajasthan during the first half of the first week and decrease thereafter, “said IMD.
Cold day to severe cold day conditions would occur in some or many points over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, northern Rajasthan and northwestern Uttar Pradesh for the next two days and would decrease thereafter, he said.
A cold snap has swept across the northern plains of India since last week with day and night temperatures below normal.
During the second week, there would be a slight increase in minimum temperatures compared to the first week.
However, minimum temperatures would be below normal by 2-4 degrees Celsius in most of Northwest, Central and East India, and close to normal or slightly above normal in the rest of the country, added the IMD.
