Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “very concerned” by the recent violence at Wistron’s iPhone manufacturing plant in Karnataka, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said on Thursday, ensuring his government’s full support for the company to restart production. . The government has given the necessary instructions and such things will not be repeated, he told reporters in Bangalore.
“We have taken action, it is a very important foreign company and this (incident) should not have happened. The prime minister is also very concerned about this development,” Yediyurappa said. “We will give all the support to that company, without any problem that they continue producing,” he added.
A section of workers at the plant, run by the Taiwanese contract manufacturer Apple in Narsapura in Kolar district, carried out vandalism on Saturday over an alleged delay in paying wages and overtime.
More than 160 people have been arrested by police in connection with the violence during which stones were thrown, windows and doors were smashed and vehicles overturned and set fire to in the parking lot. Video footage of the attack was widely shared on social media.
The state’s labor minister, Shivaram Hebbar, had said Wednesday that investigations into the violence were underway and a report would likely be released in a couple of days. He expressed hope that the factory will resume production soon with the Union government also involved in addressing the issues. The Union Ministry of Industry and Commerce has advised the state government to complete the investigation into the violence as soon as possible and to ensure that investor sentiment is not affected by this unique incident.
Meanwhile, the state Interior Minister Basavaraj Bommai said in a tweet that the police took immediate action in relation to the incident and arrested 164 people. “The Wistron company, which previously said a loss of 437 million rupees, now has in writing (said) that the loss is 43 million rupees, therefore some international media are exaggerating it,” he said.
