NEW DELHI: The Delhi government has appointed a consultant for the redesign of the roads of national capitals on the lines of European cities and it is likely to be completed in early 2023, the prime minister said. Arvind kejriwal he said Tuesday.
Chairing a review meeting, the chief minister said that the consultant should present the detailed project report by February 2021 for rapid project progress.
“PWD should remove all obstacles in redesigning city roads along European city lines to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe,” he said.
The consultant is responsible for preparing and submitting a detailed project report for February 2021 based on the tenders to be given and operations will begin in June 2021, according to a government statement.
The Delhi government is working to redesign 540 km of 100-foot-wide roads in the built-operate-transfer (BOT) model and the construction company will handle maintenance for 15 years, he said.
The Minister of the Department of Public Works, Satyendar Jain, the secretary, the chief engineer and department officials were present at the meeting.
Road bottlenecks cause traffic congestion in various parts of the city, according to the statement.
The priority will be to remove these bottlenecks first for a smooth flow of traffic and an organized lane system, he said.
The second objective would be to increase the efficiency of existing space on the roads, he said.
There will be spaces measured and planned for vehicles, non-motorized vehicles, sidewalks and side lanes.
The trails will be broadly mapped to an average of 10 feet for the convenience of pedestrians and will be redesigned and rebuilt to a standard height for the convenience of the physically disabled, he said.
The project will also improve vegetation and address the problem of dust on roads.
There will be separate spaces for planting trees on the sides of the trails, he said.
The slope of the roads, as well as the drains, will be redesigned to address the problem of flooding of the roads.
Rainwater collection structures will be built within drainage systems to store rainwater as groundwater, the statement said.
