Heavy rains are likely in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry; Spell that will last until December 22: IMD

The southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala will experience heavy rains over the next few days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its weather forecast.

According to IMD, heavy rains are highly likely to occur in isolated locations in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. These places will also witness storms accompanied by lightning.

The situation will continue until December 22, the IMD said. The Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar islands, the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam may also experience rain during this period, he added.

The weather is likely to be dry in the rest of the country, the meteorological department said in its forecast.

Meanwhile, northern India is under the grip of a cold wave and a dense fog has engulfed many states. The national capital, Delhi, recorded its lowest minimum temperature of the season on Tuesday, 4.1 degrees Celsius. On Wednesday, the low temperature in Delhi stood at 5.9 degrees Celsius (at 6.30am).

IMD has said “cold days” conditions are likely to persist in pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, northern Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh for the next two days. Some of these areas can experience a “severe cold snap” on Fridays and Saturdays.

In Himachal Pradesh, Keylong and Kalpa all recorded freezing temperatures despite the dry weather in the state.

In the Kashmir Valley, nighttime temperatures dropped below freezing due to a clear sky, with the famous Gulmarg ski resort shaking to minus 10.2 degrees Celsius.

All weather stations in the Valley recorded nighttime temperatures below freezing several degrees below normal for this part of the season, IMD officials said.

Churu was the coldest place in Rajasthan with a low of 5.2 degrees Celsius followed by Pilani, where the night temperature was 5.3 degrees Celsius.
