CHENNAI: The Covid-19 case count at IIT-Madras has risen to 183, with 79 more people testing positive for the viral infection on Tuesday.
Up to 98 of them are admitted to the National Institute on Aging on the Kings Institute campus. Those who tested positive Tuesday will undergo a basic exam that includes blood tests, X-rays and CT scans.
“All patients have mild forms of infection,” said Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan.
“Still, the results of 25 people are expected. But, the positivity rate has dropped from 25% to 15%,” he told reporters.
The infection rate in Tamil Nadu is low. “Cases at IIT are restricted within the geographic area. We are taking smart containment measures to make sure they don’t pass it on to the community. We have seen similar groups in markets and jewelry stores before,” he said.
Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said that all IIT students had been screened. “We are doing a saturated evaluation to make sure everyone gets tested. This test will be repeated after 10 days,” he said.
With 25 lakh people tested, at least one in three people in the city has undergone RT-PCR testing so far, he said. “We have tested three lakhs per million people. Early testing and treatment have helped us reduce the death rate from 2.8 to 1.7 percent,” he said.
The corporation is now making a list of frontline workers for Covid-19 vaccination. “The list will be ready by next Friday, so we can start vaccination as soon as the drug is available. The vaccine will take three months to reach the general public. Until then, the only tool available with people is a mask. “. ” he said.
