IIT-Madras Covid Cluster: Tamil Nadu to Screen Hostel Students at All Universities | Chennai News

CHENNAI: The government of Tamil Nadu will evaluate all hostel students residing in colleges and universities following the appearance of a Covid-19 group at IIT-Madras. Additionally, the higher education department ordered all educational institutions to allow take-out food for hostel students if they just have a mess or if the space is inadequate to maintain social distancing.
The health department has threatened to take action against educational institutions under the Epidemic Diseases Law and the Public Health Law of Tamil Nadu if the protocols mentioned in the SOPs are not followed.
“We will no longer be begging the institutions. If the rules and standard operating procedures are violated, we will fine them,” said Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan.
In addition, he said that the shelters and mansions of working women will also be screened in the coming days.
Greater Chennai Corporation officials began examining students at the hostel at the Guindy College of Engineering (CEG) at Anna University on Tuesday after a student reported a fever.
“Four teams from the corporation are testing all students from the hostel on the CEG campus. We are still awaiting the test results from the student who turned in their samples yesterday,” said S Iniyan, dean of CEG. There are more than 700 students residing in the hostels after the reopening of the universities for UG final year students.
Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said the civic body would conduct Covid testing in all educational institutions, including private ones.
