Rajasthan Farmers Continue Jaipur-Delhi Road Blockade

The Jaipur-Delhi National Highway in the Alwar district of Rajasthan remained partially blocked on Tuesday as farmers’ protest against the Center’s new agricultural laws entered on the third day.

The farmers were led by Swaraj Abhiyan leader Yogendra Yadav, CPIM legislator Balwan Poonia and former legislator Amra Ram.

“We don’t know why the Haryana police and the government are stopping us. We do not demand anything of them. This act of the Haryana government is not democratic, ”Yadav told reporters. Haryana police have blocked entry at its border, preventing farmers from marching towards Delhi. Farmers are occupying the border to push for their demand to repeal the three farm laws.

On Monday night, the protesting peasants had their food on the blocked national highway and slept in tents and vehicles.

Kisan Panchayat National President Rampal Chaudhary is also camping in Shahjahanpur demanding the removal of the agricultural laws. Enacted in September, the three agricultural laws have been projected by the government as major reforms in the agricultural sector that will eliminate middlemen and allow farmers to sell their products anywhere in the country.

However, protesting farmers have expressed fear that the laws would pave the way to remove the Minimum Livelihood Price safety cushion and end the mandi system, leaving them at the mercy of large corporations.
