A total of 514 students have been tested for the virus as of Tuesday.
The number of people within the IIT-Madras campus who tested positive for the coronavirus rose to 183 on Tuesday. A total of 514 students have been tested and while 104 people were declared positive for COVID-19 on Monday, another 79 tested positive for the virus on Tuesday. The next round of testing will take place after 10 days, the institute said.
The health department has continued to keep the public updated and has said there is no reason to panic. According to reports, various measures have already been taken within the institute to prevent further spread of the virus, such as closing common areas. The virus is believed to have spread due to overcrowding in a common dining area on campus.
“As soon as some students residing in shelters reported an outbreak of symptomatic cases, the Institute has consulted with civic authorities and has arranged for all students residing in shelters to be tested for COVID-19. To be cautious, all students have been asked to stay in their rooms and packed lunch is being provided to students in shelters, “the IIT said in a statement Monday.
The institute has already closed libraries, laboratories and other common facilities in light of the cluster.
“District authorities have been emphasizing that this type of spread is possible at other universities, especially in hostels. Even here, there was a common mess. We have asked that this mess be closed and prepared as a take-out option. Comes to closed spaces, crowded spaces and close contact we have to be very careful, ”Health Secretary Radhakrishnan told the media on Monday.
