Video: Indian Railways Renew Lower Side Berths on Trains

Currently, the Railways operate 230 special trains and 80 passenger trains throughout the country.

Sitting or lying in the folded-down bunk seats on the underside of trains has been an uncomfortable experience for many passengers. When folded down to make sleeping arrangements, the center part of the side bunk does not have any support, creating an unstable experience for passengers. To remedy this flaw, Indian railways have renovated the berth to make the journey comfortable for passengers. The lower side bunks will be equipped with a plank to provide additional support when folded.

Union Railways Minister Piyush Goyal recently shared a video on his Twitter page, where some rail officials can be seen demonstrating how the new model will work. A table, which has the blue leather upholstery of the seats, is placed on the side of the seats. After folding the backs of the two seats as usual, passengers can remove the board and place it on it for a stronger lower side bunk.

Tweeting the video, Piyush Goyal said: “Indian Railways is trying to make passenger travel convenient. This is an example of that. Some changes have been made to the seats, which will make passenger travel be more comfortable. “

All Indian Railways passenger trains have been suspended since the national shutdown was imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March. Shramik trains were introduced in May to allow passengers, especially migrant workers, to go to their places of origin during the blockade period. The Railways have been operating 230 special trains across the country since May. This includes 30 special Rajdhani-type trains (as of May 12) and 200 Special Mail Express trains (as of June 1).

Additionally, on September 12, Indian Railways resumed 80 new passenger trains, or 40 pairs of trains, across the country. This includes Nanda Devi Express, Humsafar Express, Vande Bharat Express, and Shatabdi Express.
