CCTV footage shows a high-speed tow truck heading straight into a head-on collision with a line of vehicles that were immobile due to a traffic jam.
A multiple collision accident at Thoppur Ghat on the Bengaluru Highway on Saturday afternoon left four dead and many more injured. The horrific accident involving a truck and at least 12 vehicles, including cars, mini trucks, and two-wheelers, caused a serious traffic jam up to a few kilometers along the Salem-Bengaluru National Highway. This stretch belongs to the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu.
Police have said that the accident was caused when a truck loaded with cement at high speed collided with vehicles that were already in traffic due to some obstruction a short distance from the scene. The driver who was driving the Salem-bound truck ran away and police are investigating the accident.

Footage from a CCTV camera that captured the accident shows a high-speed tow truck heading straight into a frontal collision with a line of vehicles that were immobile due to a traffic jam. The truck continues to move, even as the accumulation of vehicles breaches the median barricade and spills onto the median side of the road.
The resulting crowding caused a major traffic jam in the area that lasted for several hours. Among those killed in the accident were Kannan de Dharmapuri, 40, who was traveling in a two-wheeler; Madhan Kumar, 42, and her driver Karthik, 38, both from Omalur in Salem; and Nithyanandan, 35, of Coimbatore.
The traffic jam was reportedly caused by another truck that had broken down in the ghat area in the early afternoon. As police cordoned off the area, vehicles kept coming, causing a prolonged traffic jam. It was in this traffic jam that the truck crashed at full speed.
Dharmapuri District Collector SP Karthikaa, together with Police Superintendent C Praveshkumar, visited the area to supervise relief works. The injured were taken to Mohan Kumaramangalam College of Government Medicine and Dharmapuri Medical College Hospital for treatment.
