Establish a dress code in government offices, Maharashtra has now banned jeans, T-shirts and slippers for employees.
According to the order, workers must refrain from wearing clothing “with deep colors and strange embroidery patterns or drawings.” Women should wear a sari, salwar, churidar-kurta or pants with a kurta or shirt and dupatta if necessary. Men must wear pants and shirts. Employees have been advised to wear khadi once a week.
Instead of slippers, women should wear chappals, sandals, or shoes, while men should wear shoes or sandals.
This is not the first time that a government has imposed a dress code. Earlier this year, the Madhya Pradesh government issued a circular prohibiting government officials and employees of the Gwalior state division from wearing faded jeans and T-shirts in office and requiring them to wear “dignified attire, decent and formal. ” reported NDTV.
In 2019, the Bihar government issued a similar order banning the wearing of jeans and T-shirts in the secretary of state, regardless of the rank of employees. Instead, they were asked to wear “simple, dark, light-colored clothing” for the office.
In 2018, the then The government of Rajasthan devised a dress code for students, asking them to wear salwar kameez or saris on the university premises instead of Western clothing. The rule, however, was revoked after receiving many complaints from students.
In 2014, a khap panchayat in the Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh banned the use of mobile phones and jeans for girls. This year, the panchayat advised men not to go to public places with half their pants because it is “disgusting,” according to a AND ME report.
As for the Maharashtra government’s new dress code order, here’s how netizens reacted:
Those who outrage the @ Maharashtra Govt dress code for their employees will quietly obey similar codes when asked by their Pvt employers.

Most government personnel have a simple dress style, they don’t really need surveillance. #RejectDressCode https://t.co/wxmLVRhiuG– Preeti Sharma Menon (@PreetiSMenon) December 12, 2020
I think this is not an issue that is opposed by any opposition, we have more important issues to address in Maharashtra.
Every organization has the right to follow a dress code and there will be no harm if a state government tries to take pride in local culture in this way, I believe. https://t.co/UpakvfTuJj– Kishlay किसलय કિસલય কিশলয় கிஸ்லய் ਕਿਸਲਯ (@Kishlaysharma) December 12, 2020
