The president of the National Commission for Women, Rekha Sharma, has said that the body will submit details of more than 260 complaints from West Bengal to the Interior Ministry for further action if the state administration does not respond within 15 days.
Sharma was on a two-day visit to the state to investigate “inaction” in more than 267 complaints, including suo motu cases.
“The worrying situation in West Bengal is that the police are unresponsive and no action has been taken on the complaints.
Neither the general director of police nor the general secretary meet with me, and this is not the first time. They send their subordinates who have no idea about everything, ”he told PTI.
“In the last eight months, there have been more than 260 complaints and no reports have been sent to us,” Sharma added.
He said he will write to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and that if the commission does not receive any response to the complaints within the next 15 days, the matter will be referred to the Interior Ministry.
“We met with the governor during our visit this time. I’m not saying that the government can control things, but at least it can act, ”he said.
The commission has expressed concern about the “growing problem of trafficking in women” from North Bengal and tribal areas of the state.
State Minister for Women’s and Children’s Development Sashi Panja said that women are safer in the state than anywhere else in the country.
“The state government has taken all measures for the safety of women in the state. The accusations against the state administration are unfounded and politically motivated, ”he said.
