Farmer protests: two IPS officers deployed to Singhu border get COVID-19

The two policemen were in command of the police force deployed for the farmers’ protests on the Delhi-Haryana Singhu border.

Two officers from the Indian Police Service (IPS) who were deployed to the Delhi-Haryana Singhu border, where the farmers’ protest against the three controversial farm laws is taking place, tested positive for coronavirus. According to the Delhi police, both policemen are in home isolation. Outer North Deputy Superintendent of Police (DCP) Gaurav and additional DCP Ghanshyam Bansal are the police officers who tested positive, both leading teams on the Singhu border, where farmers have been housed for the past 16 days.

Meanwhile, increasing pressure on the government, protesting farmers have said they will block all toll plazas by December 12 and sit in a dharna in front of the District Collector’s offices. Farmers also threatened to block the Jaipur-Delhi Expressway and the Delhi-Agra Expressway on Saturday, saying they plan to escalate the unrest in a nationwide protest on December 14.

After several meetings with farmer leaders resulted in a stalemate, the Union government had submitted an offer to state in writing that the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism will not be eliminated. Farmer leaders responded by saying that there was nothing new on offer and that farmers’ demands for the three farm laws to be repealed entirely.

So far, six rounds of talks have been held between the Union government and Vigyan Bhavan farmers on farm laws, but the results have been inconclusive and the farmers rejected offers made by the government.

Many, including former Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal, who wrote to the president returning his Padma Vibhushan, as well as athletes, have returned their awards to express solidarity with the farmers.

Farmers have been organizing protests against three laws: the Agricultural Products Trade and Trade (Promotion and Facilitation) Act of 2020, the Agricultural Price Guarantee and Services (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement for Farmers of 2020 and the Products Act Essentials (Amendment). , 2020 – approved by Parliament in September.
