Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant sparked controversy on Tuesday (December 8) by saying that “too much democracy in India” is making “tough reforms” very difficult in the country.
However, he added that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Center has shown a willingness to carry out tough reforms in all sectors despite strong protests. But Kant’s “excess of democracy” cites strong reactions on social media.
The Center tried on Wednesday (December 9) to end the controversy with Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, saying that “we are proud of our democracy.”
Kant had made the comments at an online event, ‘The Road to Atmanirbhar Bharat,’ organized by Swarajya magazine.
“So tough reforms are very difficult in the Indian context, we are too democratic. For the first time, the government has had the courage and determination to carry out very tough reforms in all sectors: mining, coal, labor, agriculture. They are very, very difficult reforms. The easier reforms were eliminated. It took a great deal of political determination and administrative will to carry out these reforms that are being made, “Kant said in response to a question.

“There are still many reforms to be made. This government has at least demonstrated its political will to make stubborn reforms and we have to carry them out to become a major manufacturing nation. It is not easy to compete with China. It is not easy to become a nation. manufacturing, it does not go through holding seminars and webinars. It requires a very stubborn ground level approach that has been tried for the first time in India, “he added.
Kant, however, tried to defend himself by saying that he did not want to say anything bad about democracy and added that he was talking about the MEIS (Commodity Export Scheme of India to reward exporters) scheme and that resources are being distributed slowly.
