Ranchi: In a horrific reported sexual assault incident in Jharkhand’s Dumka district, a 35-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by 17 men while her husband was held hostage on Tuesday night. One of the suspects was arrested on Wednesday, following a complaint from the woman.

The alleged crime occurred under the jurisdiction of the Mufassil Police Station on Tuesday night when the complainant, who is a mother of five children, was returning home from a weekly market with her husband.
According to the woman’s statement, she and her husband were returning from the weekly market on Tuesday night when the defendant intercepted them. They took her husband hostage and then raped her, according to a report from Hindustan Times.
“The woman said she could only identify one person. We have detained the accused for questioning. If his involvement in the crime is discovered, he will be sent to jail, ”said Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Santhal region, Sudarshan Mandal and Dumka SP Ambar Lakra.
Claimant change statements, says SP
The SP further said that the plaintiff’s statements are not consistent. When he questioned her, she claimed that five men were involved in the crime, the SP said, adding that his medical examination was carried out and the report is awaited.
Another incident
In another incident, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by four people, including a minor boy, in the Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh.
The incident occurred last week and the defendant had filmed the heinous act on a mobile phone. Threatening to circulate the video on social media platforms, they raped the teenager a second time on Sunday, after which she recounted her ordeal to her family members, who then reported it to the police.
The police registered a case and arrested three of the accused, identified as Shishu Rajak Sheikh Ramzan, Sandip Rajak. His 16-year-old accomplice has been arrested.
