Former Prime Minister of Bengal and veteran Marxist leader of the Communist Party of India (CPM), 76-year-old Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata after complaining of dyspnea on Wednesday afternoon. The two-time former prime minister has been suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, a respiratory disease, for some time.
“He suffers from advanced COPD. Your Covid-19 test is negative. He’s on ventilation and I’ll say it’s critical, ”said Rupali Basu, executive director of the multi-specialty hospital in South Kolkata, where Bhattarcharjee is admitted.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the hospital where she met with doctors and inquired about her health. “He is a former CM and we respect him a lot. I wish you a speedy recovery. Doctors are taking care of him, ”he said.
Earlier today, Banerjee took to Twitter to express his concern for the health of the veteran CPI (M) leader. “Concerned to learn that former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has been hospitalized with respiratory problems. Praying for his speedy recovery and wishing him well, ”he wrote.
A statement issued by the hospital in Bhattacharjee stated: “Currently, he is on non-invasive ventilation (BIPAP) maintaining an oxygen saturation of 95%. Pulse and blood pressure are stable. You are receiving intravenous antibiotics and other supportive medications. It remains critical, but responds to current treatment. “
