Bombay:
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) detained one of Mumbai ‘s “largest” drug suppliers and recovered a list of its clients, many of whom are Bollywood celebrities, agency sources said, adding that this It could be “one of the last links” in the drug case related to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
Defendant Azam Sheikh Jumman allegedly obtained drugs directly from Himachal Pradesh and gave them to even larger suppliers.
To escape scrutiny, he even used keywords for different drugs, such as “ice cream” for high-quality hashish called Malana Cream and “Patthar (stone)” for cocaine, sources said.
Jumman was reportedly detained after several raids were carried out at various locations in the posh Andheri West area of Mumbai, including his residence.
They would arrest him after the raids were over and take him to the NCB office for questioning, an official told the ANI news agency.
In the raids so far, the OCN has recovered and seized 5 kilograms of Malana’s cream worth 2.5 million rupees and small amounts of opioids (afeem) and MDMA, name of Ecstasy Street. NCB officials also recovered Rs 13.5 lakh in cash from him.
A final evaluation of the seizure has not yet been made, NCB officials told ANI.
According to the agency’s zone director, Sameer Wankhede, who runs the operations, this is one of the “largest” smuggling seizures in recent days, and the largest loot so far in the death-linked drug case by actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
The raids on Wednesday were carried out on the basis of information provided by another drug supplier, Regel Mahakal, who was arrested on the same day and who has now been placed in police custody for 2 days.
The anti-drug agency has claimed that Mahakal and Jumman could be the missing links in the Sushant Singh Rajput drug case that turned into a broader investigation into the drug links of the Hindi film and entertainment industry.
Mahakal allegedly supplied drugs to another defendant, Anuj Keshwani, who was arrested in September. Keshwani allegedly supplied drugs to Rhea Chakraborty and her boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput, who was found dead in their Mumbai apartment in June this year.
A multi-agency investigation into his death revealed a WhatsApp chat mentioning drugs, after which the Office of Narcotics Control filed a separate case on the matter.
Since then, the NCB has questioned numerous Bollywood celebrities, including Deepika Padukone, Sara Ali Khan, Rakulpreet Singh, and Shraddha Kapoor, after their names emerged during the investigation.
So far, 26 people, including Rajput’s girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty, and her brother, have been arrested in connection with the case. The brother-sister duo, accused of acquiring and “financing” medicines for Rajputs, were recently released on bail.
Ms. Chakraborty has maintained that she has never used drugs.
