New Delhi:
A 32-year-old farmer was found dead Tuesday morning near the Delhi-Haryana border, where protesters have been camping for about two weeks against the center’s controversial farm laws.
Braving the winter cold, Ajay More from Sonipat de Haryana had been protesting together with other villagers for 10 days on the Singhu border. It is believed that he died of hypothermia.
Ajay is survived by his elderly parents, wife, and three children. At least five deaths have been reported since the protests began.
Last month, thousands of farmers began a massive upheaval, the largest in recent years, amid the new coronavirus pandemic against laws that they say will leave them at the mercy of private actors. The government has ensured that the laws will bring much-needed reforms.
They have also been demanding a written guarantee from the government on the minimum guaranteed support price or MSP for their products.
Last night, Interior Minister Amit Shah met with a delegation of farmers, hours after a national strike, Bharat Bandh, led to roadblocks, affecting transportation services and the supply of basic goods in some state.
Many trade unions and opposition leaders supported the call for protest. Several parties, such as the Trinamool Congress in Bengal, the ruling Telangana party, TRS, and the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi, held peaceful demonstrations.
However, talks between Amit Shah and the protesters failed to resolve the deadlock, and both sides held firm to their positions. The center’s sixth round of talks with protesters, scheduled for today, was also canceled.
Farmers’ unions met this afternoon at the Singhu border to plan their future course of action. Representatives from various opposition parties also plan to meet with President Ram Nath Kovind today on farmers’ issues.
