Sixth round of talks canceled, says farmer leader after meeting with Amit Shah

All India Kisan Sabha leader Hannan Mollah said the sixth round of talks between the government and the Center, scheduled for Wednesday, has been canceled. His statement came after 13 farmer leaders met with Union Interior Minister Amit Shah. Mollah said the minister told them that a proposal will be delivered to peasant leaders on Wednesday.

Before the meeting, the farmer leaders had said that they would simply ask a “yes or no” to their demands.

A Bharat Bandh, or a nationwide shutdown, was called on Tuesday from 11 am to 3 pm by farmers protesting against the new farm laws.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party alleged that the police placed Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal under house arrest after he went to meet farmers at the Singhu border on Monday.

Farmers, mostly from Punjab and Haryana, have protested against the laws for almost two months. The situation intensified twelve days ago, when thousands marched towards the Capital, where they clashed with police who used tear gas, water cannons and batons against them. Since then, farmers have camped along Delhi’s borders, saying they will not leave until the government repeals the laws.
