Chandigarh:
A Punjabi family asked their relatives and friends to donate money for farmers protesting in and around Delhi over the repeal of the Center’s agricultural laws instead of giving them wedding gifts, a video showed.
They also set up a special donation box inside the venue and asked from the dance floor for generous donations.
“Instead of paying us ‘shagun’ money for the couple, please donate for the protesting farmers in Delhi. This money will be used to provide food, warm clothing and other essential items to the farmers, “says an announcer in a video of the wedding event.
The incident took place in Muktsar in Punjab, about 250 kilometers from Chandigarh.
Farmers fear that the three laws will cause their income to fall and make them susceptible to exploitation by corporate companies. However, the Center claims that the laws will eliminate intermediaries as farmers will be able to sell their products wherever they want.
Several rounds of talks between the protesting farmers and the Center have failed to end the stalemate so far.
Farmer groups say they would agree to nothing more than the removal of three new laws enacted in September.
Interior Minister Amit Shah met with farmers tonight and raised hopes for a resolution a day before the government’s sixth round of negotiations to end mass protests against farm laws.
