The medical colleges in Tamil Nadu for undergraduate and graduate students are set to reopen as of today, December 7, 2020. In addition to the medical colleges, the government of Tamil Nadu has also granted permission to universities to reopen for final year undergraduate students. Universities had previously reopened for graduate students.
Although the universities would reopen, attendance has remained optional. Universities would continue classes online for students who are unable or unwilling to physically attend classes. Guidelines and published standard operating procedures would be followed with regard to security measures.
First-year classes for undergraduate courses would begin on February 1, 2020. Hostels with limited capacity may also reopen as of today, December 7, 2020. However, students are encouraged to check with the respective shelters to understand the rules and guidelines to be followed. Tamil Nadu Prime Minister K Palaniswami had announced the decision to reopen last Monday. Colleges would be required to follow strict guidelines when it comes to the sanitation of classrooms and common areas. Mandatory thermal scanning at points of entry, adequate social distancing and the use of branding would also be guaranteed.
Apart from these, the number of students that can sit in a classroom has been limited. University authorities must ensure notices in prominent places that inform students about basic hygiene measures to be followed.
Universities in Tamil Nadu for final year graduate students had reopened on December 2, 2020. Attendance at universities, however, remained low as most students stayed away.
