Armed Forces Flag Day is celebrated in India every year on December 7 to honor the martyrs and men in uniform who serve India. Citizens are encouraged to make voluntary contributions to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund for the well-being of personnel and former military personnel, their families, and also to rehabilitate those wounded in wars.
On December 2, Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh appealed to people to contribute to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF) to honor the sacrifices made by soldiers in the line of duty, and announced that the ‘Armed Forces Flag Day’ would be celebrated throughout December. “The Center and the states together with the Board of Sainik will celebrate ‘Armed Forces Flag Day’ throughout December. It is our national responsibility to support the families of our security personnel, who have lost their lives or been injured in the line of duty, ”Singh said while speaking with the ANI news agency.
To celebrate the day, the three branches of the Indian armed forces – the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Navy – organize a variety of shows, carnivals, dramas and other entertainment programs to show to the general public. the efforts of its staff to ensure national security.
The day was first observed on December 7, 1949. That year, the then government attempted to involve ordinary people to contribute to the well-being of defense personnel. After the country gained independence, there was a looming shortage of funds for the welfare of the armed forces. On August 28, 1949, a committee established under the Defense Minister decided to observe a Flag Day annually on December 7. The committee had suggested it would distribute flags to citizens in exchange for their contributing to the fund for armed forces personnel.
The Indian Armed Forces Flag Day is mainly observed to rehabilitate those wounded in wars, for the well-being of serving soldiers and their families and the well-being of ex-military and their families. Also, the money raised is used to provide aid to ex-military men who are battling serious health problems such as heart disease, cancer and joint replacement, etc.
According to the Ministry of Defense, each year around 60,000 defense personnel are forced to withdraw to keep the armed forces young. They are released between 35 and 40 years old, they are young and in good physical shape. Therefore, caring for these former soldiers and their families is a national responsibility.
