With the unopposed election of the BJP leader and former Bihar Senior Deputy Minister Sushil Kumar Modi al Rajya Sabha, the number of party deputies in the state’s upper house has risen to four.
Modi was declared elected on Monday unopposed to the Rajya Sabha in a detour that was necessitated by the death of the Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party founder Ram Vilas Paswan.
In addition to the former senior deputy minister, a lone independent candidate, Shyam Nandan Prasad had submitted his nomination papers which were rejected during the scrutiny. The Prasad documents were not endorsed by at least 10 members of the 243-member assembly as proponents, which is mandatory, election officials said.
Modi received his certificate in the presence of a host of dignitaries, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, with whom he is known to enjoy an excellent relationship, his successors such as Senior Deputy Minister Tar Kishore Prasad and Renu Devi, and BJP State President Sanjay Jaiswal. .
Of the 16 Rajya Sabha members from Bihar, JD (U) and the RJD have five each, while Congress has a representation for Rajya Sabha and one seat is vacant. Besides Modi, the other three MPs of the BJP Rajya Sabha are Gopal Narain Singh, Vivek Thakur and Satish Chandra Dubey.
The high-ranking leader of the BJP, although elected to RS, earned a rare distinction of representing the country’s four chambers. He had been a member of the Lok Sabha, the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council of Bihar and is now a member of the Rajya Sabha.
Modi was the leader of the opposition in the Bihar assembly from 1996 to 2004. In 2004, he was elected to the 14 Lok Sabha of the Bhagalpur parliamentary constituency, a seat he vacated after becoming the deputy CM of the government of the NDA in Bihar in 2005.
