New Delhi:
With growing support from trade unions and opposition parties for tomorrow’s “Bharat Bandh” call, some services, including fruit and venerable supplies, could be affected in Delhi, now the epicenter of farmers’ protests, and the rest of the country. The call for a “peaceful” national shutdown on December 8, a day before the sixth round of talks between protesting farmers and the center, is aimed at increasing pressure on the government to repeal three controversial farm reform laws. “The protest is to show that we do not support some of the government’s policies,” said Rakesh Tikait, spokesman for the Bharatiya Kisan Union. The unions have said their protest is “peaceful and will continue that way.”
Here is a list of all the things you need to know about Bharat Bandh:
-
The farmers urged people to extend their support non-violently and said their protest was not intended to “cause trouble for the common man.” “Tomorrow’s Bharat Bandh is from 11am to 3pm. It is a symbolic protest. We will start at 11am so everyone can get to the office on time … Services like ambulance, even weddings, can continue. show your card and leave, “said Bharatiya Kisan Union spokesman Rakesh Tikait.
-
Members of farmers’ unions will block national roads and occupy toll plazas, Harinder Singh Lakhowal, general secretary of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, said previously.
-
The supply truck movement could be affected in many states as all of India’s motor transport unions have voiced their support for farmers. They will organize peaceful demonstrations and try to present a memorandum to the district collectors and commissioners to solve the problems “amicably and to the satisfaction of the farmers as soon as possible.”
-
In Delhi, most traders support the so-called Bharat Bandh. “So mandis will see closure,” said Adil Ahmed Khan, president of Azadpur Mandi, Asia’s largest fruit and vegetable wholesale market, which could be in short supply tomorrow.
-
In Maharashtra, the Vashi Agricultural Products Market Committee would close tomorrow. It is likely to affect the supply of fruits and vegetables in Mumbai. There is no confirmation if other mandis would also be closed.
-
Travelers in Delhi and Tamil Nadu may face problems as some taxi and taxi unions have decided to back the closure. But cars and those offering last-mile connectivity will continue to work, the unions said.
-
Several banking unions have called for a black gang protest to show support for farmers, but this is unlikely to affect banking services.
-
Bandh is likely to be best seen in Punjab, which has extended its full support. Protests are likely to take place in Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Telanaga, and the north-eastern states of Tripura and Assam, among others. This is likely to create traffic congestion. States governed by the BJP are likely to issue travel advisories.
-
All opposition parties except Trinamool Congress (Shiv Sena, Congress, DMK, Kamal Haasan MNM, RJD, Samajwadi Party, NCP, Aam Aadmi Party, the newly created People’s Alliance for the Gupkar Declaration in J&K and a collection left teams) have backed the farmers and said they would organize demonstrations in the cities tomorrow.
-
Amid growing support for the repeal of the “black laws”, the BJP has denounced the “duplicity” of farmers and opposition parties on the issue of agricultural reforms. He responded with nuggets from the past, reminding them that allowing private players to enter the agricultural sector was his demand not so long ago.
