The Bharat Bandh (national strike) called by farmers on Tuesday (December 8) in protest against three new agricultural laws passed by the Center will affect services in various sectors.
“It will be an emphatic Bharat Bandh on December 8,” India Kisan Federation President Prem Singh Bhangu said on Saturday after the fifth round of talks between farmer leaders and the Center failed to break the deadlock. .
Farmers protest against the Agricultural Products Trade and Trade (Promotion and Facilitation) Act of 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Guarantee and the Agricultural Services Act of 2020 and the Essential Products Act (Amendment ) of 2020. Farmers claim that these laws will end the minimum support price system in the future and will give companies full control over the agricultural sector.
On the other hand, the government has projected these laws as important reforms in the agricultural sector that will eliminate intermediaries and help in the growth of farmers’ incomes.
What can be affected during Bharat Bandh:
Inhabitants of Delhi are expected to face trouble as several car and taxi unions in the national capital have decided to join Bharat Bandh. However, many other unions have decided not to support the bandh.
The chairman of the Delhi Tourist Taxi Carriers Association Sanjay Samrat said in a statement that several unions, including the Delhi State Taxi Cooperative Society, and the Kaumi Ekta Welfare Association, will join the strike on December 8.
However, Rajender Soni, general secretary of Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh, and the Delhi Pradesh Taxi Union, said that many “important” car, taxi and last mile drivers unions will not join the strike. “We fully sympathize with the farmers’ struggle and support their demand. But drivers of cars, taxis and Gramin Sewa and other vehicles of the last mile are already badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and cannot afford to go on strike now, ”Soni said.
